Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching, and love is in the air. Campus is filled with heart-shaped decorations and roses as students look forward to celebrating the day with their significant others and friends. This week, some students may find themselves without a significant other to drown in affection. Many of these people may find themselves turning to the world of online dating.
Technology is starting to become a significant part of international culture, and online dating has come up along with it. Tinder, OkCupid, Grindr and match.com are just a few of the dating websites and apps that have found their niche. But the big question is: can true love and lasting relationships be found through online dating? We asked some UAB students what they think.
“I believe they can [find love on Tinder]. The app was made for hookups, but let's be honest, snapchat was meant for sexual pictures but ended up being used as a way for friends to send pics,” senior Scott Gamble said. “Also, I have a friend who is in a relationship with a girl he met on tinder. I think it depends on the person and how they use the app, but it is definitely possible.”
While many people using Tinder may find love, many do not necessarily use the app for that purpose.
“I feel like most of the people use it for hookups or if they are bored and just want to talk to people they will never see or hear from again just for conversation,” Gamble said.
Dating apps have also developed to focus on more narrow groups. The South Asian app, DilMil, is quite well-known amongst the multicultural population at UAB and other Southeastern state schools.
“I don’t personally think that DilMil is an effective way to find someone if you are in college, but if you are past this point and you are older, I know it has worked for a few,” biology major Param Patel said. “I don’t think that anyone of South Asian interest who doesn’t have their life together can find someone on here. For me, it is just good fun.”
“I know a couple of people who have met people off Tinder. They are still in relationships. I think it can work if people are honest on the internet,” senior Rachel Williams said. “I could date someone off a site if I knew they were honest.”
Some people also find love on social media, rather than on a dating website.
“I personally met the love of my life on Instagram and have been dating for 1 year and 2 months now. Since I have not used a dating website, I cannot say that it is impossible to find love there,” senior Jasmine Starling said. “It can be a great way for people to interact and look for traits in those they may possibly be interested in.”
“I have met someone on Tumblr, but that’s not a dating website. A relationship didn’t come from it, but she and I are really good friends now. My brother has used dating sites before. I believe he used match.com. I know he has met a few people through it, but the relationships have lasted for maybe a few months,” senior Scott Marine said. “I think there is nothing wrong with trying to find love or relationships from online dating sites. I feel like it provides another way of communicating to a large variety of people that someone wouldn’t be able to do just by meeting people in their local community.”
While many people agree that love and meaningful relationships can be found through online dating or through meeting people online, many also disagree.
“I don't currently use a dating website and personally I wouldn't want to. I don't think there is anything wrong with them but I would rather find love 'naturally' instead of being paired up with someone just because we happen to have some of the same things in coming based on an aptitude test or an interest survey,” senior Kiyah Herlong said. “I definitely think it's easier if you meet someone naturally when you aren't expecting it instead of trying so hard to make it happen yourself. Although I have nothing against dating websites or social media, I feel like people who resort to those measures to find love are trying to take things into their own hands instead of letting fate play out on its own.”
“I’m not completely against online dating, but I think that it’s a form of cheating, because you can give someone an impression of yourself that is not honest, because you can be whoever you want to be online,” senior Jeremy Jackson said. “People should meet face-to-face, because it makes you better as a person, and if it doesn’t work out, then you know what you work on. Online, you can think about what you’re going to type. I think that people should meet in a traditional way.”
Many students also believe that meeting online people can be a threat, because you may not know enough about a person to gauge the safety of being around them.
“Who knows if the person is who they say they are, and what if they have some severe psychological problems and they’re a murder,” senior Dahae Park said. “I think that online dating is a great for the people who do find love through dating sites, but I don’t think it’s for me.”
While some students think that online dating is dangerous, many also think that there are ways to decipher whether a person poses a threat or not.
“You may not know the first time you meet a person if they are the one for you but there are many ways to at least find out if they are really who they say they are. If their demographics match what is portrayed online, you can start there,” Starling said. “Chat online for a little while to get a feel of who they are and this also gives you time to look for good and bad cues. When you finally meet, always meet in a public place during the day where there are other people around.”
Many UAB students have either used a dating site, or know someone who has used a dating site and have found meaningful relationships through them.
